Gearboxes are used to provide mechanical advantage for operating valves that require higher torque than can be applied directly by hand. By using reduction gearing, the gearbox allows the valve to be opened or closed smoothly and with controlled force, even in high-pressure or large-diameter pipeline applications. The gear ratio determines the balance between operating torque and handwheel travel.
Gearboxes are commonly fitted to gate valves, globe valves, butterfly valves, and ball valves, particularly where manual operation is required but direct operation would be difficult due to line pressure, valve size, or packing load. They may be equipped with position indicators, travel stops, locking devices, or handwheel extensions as needed for installation conditions.
Gearboxes are used in power plants, water distribution networks, chemical processing, refinery piping, and general industrial service. Selection takes into account the required output torque, operating temperature, mounting interface, environmental resistance, and whether manual override capability is needed in actuator-equipped systems.
